That was why I got arrested for murder. Or was it accessory to murder? I can’t remember.

The police have never liked me, especially Detective Drake. I do see why they are suspicious since I have a penchant for stumbling over corpses. They really took offense when the local paper hailed me as the Bluegrass’ very own Miss Marple. Might as well have put a bull’s-eye on my back. The police are quite jealous of who takes credit for solving murders. They don’t like amateurs stealing their thunder.

The police were called after the man was confirmed dead by Charles. They came, cordoned off the corn maze, took pictures, interviewed guests, searched the grounds, and arrested me.

My heart attack ruse didn’t work. Kelly threw me in the back of a squad car and brought me to police headquarters, where he deposited me in an interview room—one that I had been interrogated in many times before.

“Don’t you dare cuff me to that nasty desk,” I said to Kelly, flecks of spit flying from my mouth.

Kelly looked pained. “This is standard procedure now.”

“I’m wearing a long skirt with crinolines. I have no money. You’ve taken my shoes. I limp when I walk. How am I supposed to escape?”

He hesitated. “Okay, but I’m going to get into trouble for this.”

“I don’t care. I’m a victim. Not a murderer. This is a revenge tactic from Drake. He doesn’t like it that I get more publicity than he does for solving murders.”

“You don’t care if I get into trouble?”

“No, not at the moment. As soon as I have the chance I’m going to call your mother and tell her about your disgraceful conduct toward me.”

That put the lid on the kettle. Kelly stomped out of the room. A few seconds later I heard angry voices in the hallway. It was Drake and Kelly going at it. The arguing stopped and a door slammed.

In walked Drake looking all bothered. His blue polka dot tie was loosened, and it barely covered a ketchup stain on his crumpled white shirt. What male over the age of twelve wears a polka dot tie, I ask you?

“Mrs. Reynolds. Another body, eh. They do keep piling up around you.”

“It’s a gift.” I could barely look at Drake, I hated the man so much. He had given me nothing but grief since he had taken over for my friend, Detective Goetz, in the department. He was constantly pulling me downtown for “interviews.” It was not my fault I kept stumbling over corpses. It was a knack.

“A gift? More like a curse. You’re the Typhoid Mary of murders, you know.”

I didn’t reply.

“Do you know why you are here?”

“Would it be because you are a petty bureaucrat?”

That really got under Drake’s skin. His mouth set in a hard line, making his lips all the thinner. “You were the last person to see Skeeter Statler alive. You have blood on your shoes.”

“I’m not talking to you, Drake. I’m waiting for my lawyer.”

“You’re pleading the fifth?”

“I’m waiting for my lawyer.
